This season’s Premier League title race has been one of the best and most exciting in many a year, with the lead changing every game or so between Liverpool and Manchester City over the last couple of months. Liverpool currently lead the way by two points, but they have played a game more than Manchester City, who if they win their game in hand, would go top of the table by a point.
Both sides have been in incredible form recently, putting together win after win. City have been sweeping many opponents aside with some outstanding football whereas Liverpool have had to battle like tigers to secure wins, notably against Tottenham were a last minute own goal proved crucial, but also against Chelsea, where a Mo Salah thunderbolt added to a Sadio Mane header to give the Reds a vital win on Sunday.

However, this coming week could well prove to be the pivotal week in one way or another. Liverpool face just the one game, a tricky trip to Cardiff City this Sunday, with the Bluebirds fighting for their life after a superb 2-0 away win over Brighton in midweek saw them close the gap on the Seagulls to just two points, although Brighton do have a game in hand.
City are in action on Saturday with another home game against Tottenham, coming just a few days after they face the same opponents in their crucial Champions League quarterfinal second leg tie, with City trailing 1-0 from the first leg in London. Then just four days later, City travel the short distance across Manchester to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Wednesday night.
Liverpool fans are fervently hoping City will drop points in one or even both of these tough games, but City have been exceptionally good against the top six this season and their current form in the Premier League is outstanding, winning all their games since that shock defeat to Newcastle United at the turn of the year.

Both sides are also in action in the Champions League this week with Liverpool facing FC Porto tonight leading 2-0 from the first leg at Anfield, while Manchester City face Tottenham at the Etihad trailing 1-0 from the first leg in London. Should either team make it through they would face a further two games at least, with another game if they reach the final.
City also have the FA Cup Final to play against Watford after the final League game of the season and the Citizens have played around 10 games more than Liverpool this season thanks to their progress in both domestic cup competitions, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
This Coming Week – Predictions
- Manchester City v Tottenham (Sat 20th)
I think the outcome of this game may well hinge on how the result on Wednesday has gone. If City win and progress on Wednesday I think Spurs will be wanting to bounce back here. If Spurs win, then I think City will be going all out for revenge and to ensure they maintain their league position. City have a huge advantage being at home and having beaten Spurs in the league already this season, they will be very confident, especially the form they are in.
Tottenham are also without Harry Kane but they also have shown real threat against City in their home game and gave Liverpool a real fright at Anfield. Spurs could well provide City’s biggest test here and if they hit top form and take their chances, it is not beyond Tottenham to earn a draw here.
Tip – Draw – 17/4
- Cardiff City v Liverpool (Sun 21st)
Cardiff City closed the gap on Brighton to just two points with their win at the AMEX in midweek and they will go into this game much more confident. The Bluebirds have proven to be tough to beat at home and Liverpool will not find this an easy test, especially with Neil Warnock not being the clubs biggest fan.
However, Liverpool are flying at the moment and although Cardiff will make it tough, the Reds have come through tougher tests unscathed. Regardless of how City have got on the day before, the onus on them winning here will be incredible and so far they have risen to that challenge. I am backing Liverpool to win this one.
Tip – Liverpool to win – 2/11
- Manchester United v Manchester City (Wed 24th)
There’s going to be no love lost between these two teams and with Manchester United now dumped out of Europe by Barcelona in midweek, they will be looking for a response in their next two games. United face Everton away at the weekend and that is a big game for their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season and this game is an equally important one for the Red Devils.
City though will know that their recent record at Old Trafford is pretty good but even so, this is a derby game and anything can happen in these types of matches. At some point having so many top games one after the other is going to catch up with City and I think this could be the game that it does.
Tip – Manchester United to win – 5/1
