Last season was an incredible one in many ways for football fans. Across Europe, Barcelona, Juventus, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich all once again dominated their domestic leagues, but in England it was Manchester City that were the dominant force, claiming their second Premier League title in a row and all three of the other domestic trophies that they could win.
However, in Europe, it was a different English team on top with Liverpool claiming the biggest prize of the season with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League final, while in the Europa League final, Chelsea thumped Arsenal in Baku to claim silverware in what was Mauricio Sarri’s farewell game for the club before he left for Juventus.
Those heady European finals seem just a few weeks ago, but incredibly we are already now getting back into the swing of things for the new season with teams already back in pre-season training and the first friendly games, and in some cases European Champions League and Europa League qualifiers taking place.

We will be bringing you a special preview of the forthcoming Premier League season in a couple of weeks time, but we are now going to give you some of our tips for which teams will be the ones in contention across some of the other big leagues around Europe this season, starting with our friends north of the border.
Scottish Premier League Tip – Rangers (9/4)
Given the strength of the opposition and their relative financial strengths, it will likely be a two-horse race in the Scottish Premier League this season. Celtic have won the last eight titles but Rangers made significant progress under Steven Gerrard last season and having made some shrewd moves in the market this summer, I feel they are ready to put up a fierce challenge to Celtic this year.
The Celts have been in the news more for players wanting away from the club, rather than new names coming in. Neil Lennon, in his second spell as manager, now faces a tough task to hold onto the title the club won last season. This one could be very close and could even go down to the wire on the last weekend of the season.
Spanish Primera Liga Tip – Barcelona – 4/6
Despite having spent a huge amount of money already this summer, and the possibility that Zinedine Zidane’s dealings both coming into and going out of the club may not yet be done, Real Madrid are a much-changed team for the forthcoming season and I think those changes have made them a stronger team.
Eden Hazard’s capture is a shrewd move in particular, but even so, I still fee Barcelona have the edge here with Messi and Suarez still firing well and the possibility that Neymar could return to the club from Paris St Germain. For me, that alone means Barcelona should do just enough to reclaim their title for another year, but I do feel Real will run them much closer this time around.
German Bundesliga Tip – Borussia Dortmund – 9/2
It seemed as if Bayern Munich’s long dominance of the Bundesliga was coming to an end last season with Dortmund taking a commanding lead at the top of the table at one stage, but over the course of the second half of the season, Bayern closed the gap on Dortmund and eventually overtook them in the table, hammering the Ruhr-based side 5-0 at one point in the process.
So in the end, Bayern were crowned Champions once again but this Dortmund team has the potential to bounce back from that. They will miss Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic, but they have a squad packed with other talented players and enhanced by the signing of Mats Hummels from Bayern. His calming presence will be vital in a defence that sorely needed it at times last season. This will be a very close race between two well-matched sides and while the bookies fancy Munich, I think Dortmund will just sneak it.
