Can United Topple Liverpool to Remain Second in a Premier League Classic?

There’s just a few days to go before the Cheltenham Festival gets underway this year but before that, there is a busy weekend of football with some massive clashes between bitter rivals this weekend. In England, no rivalry is greater than that between Manchester United and Liverpool and it is perhaps fitting that these teams will kick off what promises to be an amazing week of sports betting with Coral Sports on Saturday lunchtime.

Before we focus on that game as well as some other tips from Premier League games taking place this weekend, let’s take a look at the full list of fixtures for the Premier League across Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Preview and Tips

  • Manchester United v Liverpool

Second takes on third in a clash of two giants and arguably the two most fierce rivals in the Premier League. The teams drew 0-0 at Anfield earlier in the season, thanks largely to David De Gea in the Manchester United goal. Liverpool’s much vaunted attack has scored 11 more goals than United this season, but their defence has let in 10 more and it is likely that the Reds back line will be tested again on Saturday.

United come into the game on the back of a superb 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night where they came back from 2-0 down to secure a vital three points that keeps them two ahead of Liverpool in the race for second. Liverpool played 24-hours after that in a dour 0-0 draw with FC Porto at Anfield, a result which sees the Reds progress into the Champions League quarter finals 5-0 on aggregate.

In terms of form, both sides have similar form over the last 10 games, but Liverpool have been in good shape of late but United at home have been excellent this season, though Liverpool also have the second best away record in the Premier League.

There are many ways that this game could well go, but with such a strong home record it is hard to see United getting beat, however Liverpool look in good shape too, so I am backing this one to be an entertaining draw.

Match Result Tip – Man Utd v Liverpool – Draw – 12/5 with Coral

  • West Brom v Leicester City

Neither side are in particularly good form heading into this game, the Foxes have hit a bit of a slump of late, picking up draws rather than wins and that has halted their progress up the table a little. West Brom are now cut adrift at the bottom of the table and it now looks like it is a matter of when, rather than if they are relegated. I fancy the Foxes to get back to winning ways here against a West Brom side that is already starting to look a little demoralised and completely lacks confidence and form.

Match Result Tip – Leicester to win – 31/20

  • Huddersfield Town v Swansea City

These two teams were amongst the favourites for the drop this season but both are fighting hard to preserve their Premier League status and both have a good chance of achieving that. Swansea are in great form and come into this game having beaten West Ham 4-1 last weekend, but Huddersfield will be looking to get back to winning ways at home after defeats to Man Utd and Spurs in their last two home matches. I think the home side just about nick this one.

Match Result Tip – Huddersfield to win – 29/20

  • West Ham United v Burnley

I think this is a game that has a draw written large all over it. Burnley don’t concede very many goals and West Ham don’t score a great deal. Both sides will feel a point isn’t too bad a result given their relative positions in the table and especially given West Ham United’s lengthy injury list. In terms of talent, West Ham should win this but David Moyes side were thumped 4-1 by Swansea last time out and I think would happily take a point if offered now.

Match Result Tip – West Ham v Burnley – Draw – 2/1

  • Everton v Brighton

Everton’s recent home form is pretty decent which is a giood job because their away form is absolutely shocking over the long term. Brighton though have shown themselves to be a very shrewd outfit this season and they are bang in form and moving themselves clear of the relegation battle. Everton will fancy a win here and usually, I’d back them to get it, but something tells me the Seagulls are going to end up with something from this long trip north.

Match Result Tip – Everton v Brighton – Draw – 21/10

  • Newcastle United v Southampton

Both sides haven’t lost many games of late, but neither have they won many, picking up draws in most of their last six matches. That means that both sides are still very much embroiled in the relegation battle and three points here for either side would be a massive boost to their hopes of survival. Both sides are worryingly inconsistent however, but their home win over Man Utd should have given Newcastle enough of a boost to get a vital three points here.

Match Result Tip – Newcastle to win – 33/20

  • Chelsea v Crystal Palace

With their top four ambitions now hanging by a thread and massive criticism for how they approached the game with Manchester City last weekend, will Chelsea have their full focus on this game, or their game in midweek against Barcelona in the Champions League? Despite all their quality, I think there are real issues bubbling under the surface at Stamford Bridge. Palace have lost their last three, but I fancy them to get a shock point here at the Bridge.

Match Result Tip – Chelsea v Crystal Palace – Draw – 21/5

  • Arsenal v Watford

Can Arsene Wenger end his dismal run of form with a win over a Watford side that defeated Arsenal in the reverse fixture earlier in the season? They certainly have the squad capable too and it would be just like Arsenal to put in a sublime performance here. However, their best chance of Champions League football could well be by winning the Europa League and Arsene Wenger’s focus may be more on that 2-legged tie with AC Milan than this one. I’m backing Arsenal to win but not by much.

  • Bournemouth v Tottenham

Bournemouth’s form this season has been somewhat erratic to say the least. They have played well one week, but then been atrocious the next and it must drive manager Eddie Howe crazy to see his side’s Jekyll and Hyde character. There’s no room for error here though against a bang in form Tottenham side and although Bournemouth have performed well against top sides at times this season, this is a game I see Spurs winning relatively trouble-free.

Match Result Tip – Tottenham to win – 1/2 with Coral

  • Stoke City v Manchester City

Monday night’s game should be a relative stroll in the park for Manchester City against a Stoke City side that have shipped plenty of goals this season and were hit for seven when City beat them 7-2 at the Etihad earlier in the season. Pep Guardiola’s team are just a few wins away from the title and I cannot see any way that their celebrations are delayed by not picking up a result here. Man City should win this one comfortably.
